Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, in 1960 and 1966, respectively. Dr.-Ing. h.c. degree in 1999, VDE Ring of Honour 2001, IEEE Life Fellow in 2005


In 1967, he conducted control research at Stanford University, Stanford, CA. He became Head of Flight Control and Avionics Group of the Dornier Aerospace Comp., Friedrichshafen, Germany in 1968.
From 1972 to 2003 he was Professor and Director of the Automatic Control Laboratory within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the Technische Universität München, Germany.
For the period 1985 to1987 he was elected Dean of the Faculty. Over more than 40 years he served in many other academic and industrial positions both in Germany and abroad.

Research Interests

Automatiom and Control of Complex Industrial Systems, Advanced Robotics, Telepresence, Neuroprosthetics.


Authored and co-authored more than 450 publications,  books and holds several international patents. He is on the editorial board of several international journals in the field of Control and Robotics and served 10years as editor of the scientific journal at-Automatisierungstechnik
