Paul H. Brunner is Professor Emeritus at Vienna University of Technology. From 1991 to 2015, he was holding the Chair for Waste Management and acted as head of the Institute for Water Quality, Resources and Waste Management. He served as Dean of Academic Affairs of the Civil Engineering Department, and is member and chair person of science advisory groups of national and international research bodies.

Educated in natural sciences (organic chemistry), he has crossed the disciplinary boarder and is now active in the fields of civil and environmental engineering. His areas of interest are waste management and "urban metabolism". He specializes in methods to analyze, evaluate, control and design flows and stocks of materials and energy in the so called "anthroposphere". The goal of his methodologically oriented research is to optimize the urban metabolism in view of resource conservation and long term environmental protection.
