Evening Lecture on Membrane Lightweight Structures

On January 18, 2012 the Austrian Society of Engineers and Architects (ÖIAV) organized an evening lecture in cooperation with the Vienna University of Technology. The participants of the postgraduate program “Membrane Lightweight Structures” followed this invitation.

The festival hall of the ÖIAV has been renovated and since recently it shines in new splendor. In this historic and magnificent setting several lectures were held on the topic of “Architecture and Engineering of Membrane Lightweight Structures”. Experts in this field such as Silja Tillner (Architekten Tillner & Willinger), Horst Dürr (IF Group), Julian Lienhard (ITKE Stuttgart) and Robert Wehdorn-Roithmayr (Formfinder Software GmbH) talked about their projects.

Silja Tillner introduced the retractable membrane roof of the Vienna City Hall’s Court Yard (Arkadenhof). A movable, yet permanent roof structure was designed for the Arkadenhof - a protected historic monument – to protect cultural events taking place in the court yard from sun and rain. In total, the membrane roof covers one thousand square meters of surface.
Cornelia Sand (Sefar Group) introduced technical fabrics which can be used for industrial applications and textile architecture. She showed different membrane projects such as the umbrellas for the Wasseralfingen Castle or a lightpylon in a roundabout. Further examples of membranes in outdoor applications were sunsails for pilgrams in Medina or the retractable tensioned roof system which now covers the outdoor space of the Kufstein Castle.
The lectures showed the big variety of usage of foils and fabrics in the vast field of membranes.
