Facility Manager: the importance of strategic company goals

For a very long time, facility management was associated only with building technology and a facility manager was diminished to a maintenance man. This image has evolved quite a lot: FM has now become an broad management task, the facility manager being considered the connection point between the core business process and the building infrastructure, says Prof. Alexander Redlein Director of the Center for Information and Facility Management (IFM) at the Vienna University of Technology. A facility manager is responsible for adapting the infrastructures to changes in business processes, which in turn are derived from the strategic goals of a company. The strategy and the goals of a business are decisive for the management of its infrastructure.

Further details to this subject can be found in this “Presse” article.

The Vienna University of Technolgy reacted to this by offering the Professional MBA in Facility Management which focuses on conveying the management competence. Professor Alexander Redlein is the academic director of this postgraduate program which will start in March 2013 the next time. Further information can be found at fm.tuwien.ac.at.
