Business Breakfast high above the rooftops of Vienna!

The role of renewable energy heading towards sustainable energy systems

For the first time, the Business Breakfast of the master program MSc Renewable Energy in Central & Eastern Europe (CEE) has taken place in the Plus Energy high-rise office building at the so-called Getreidemarkt, which is the first one throughout Austria. Besides, the master program has been around already for ten years. On Thursday, March 12, 2015 forenoon, in honour of this occasion, more than 20 guests came. Among the guests were leading experts, ambassadors of the CEE countries, representatives of the Provincial Chamber of Agriculture of Austria and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber as well as alumni.
Herbert Greisberger (Energie- und Umweltagentur Niederösterreich), Karl Gruber (Wien Energie GmbH – Division of Renewable Power Generation), Hans Kronberger (Federal Association Photovoltaic Austria), Klaus Maras (Energie Burgenland Windkraft), Martin Nesirky (United Nations Information Service), David Rezac-Kowald (Bundesministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Wirtschaft), Wolfgang Trimmel (Energie Burgenland Windkraft), Brigitte Weiss (Bundesministerium für Verkehr, Innovation und Technologie) and Ron Willis (Club for Trade Delegates in Austria), to name but a few, accepted the invitation of the cooperation partners Continuing Education Center (CEC) of the Vienna University of Technology and the Energiepark Bruck/Leitha.

As part of the presentation, Reinhard Haas (Academic Director, MSc Renewable Energy in CEE) emphasized the relevance and the demand of renewable energy. Before presenting the current success story, he addressed following question to the audience: “Renewables: Finally a success story?” Reinhard Haas was able the answer the question clearly in the affirmative. Moreover, he based his answer on solid conclusions. According to his speech, currently, we are in a crucial turn and therefore, there is right now enough available facility to have a sustainable effect on the global energy system. Consequently, the combination of technological possibilities and existing demand is required.

Karin Mottl (Managing Director, Energiepark Bruck/Leitha) presented the Energy Park Bruck/Leitha, which was established in 2009. She presented the different priorities, the respective business areas as well as projects. Furthermore, Karin Mottl gave a brief overview of the course content of the master program MSc Renewable Energy in CEE. A highlight, she emphasized, is the offer of the Country Modules. In addition to the exchange of experience and the in-depth knowledge with local experts odds are making a contact with significant people and to establish an international network. Now, following Country Modules are offered: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey. In the presentation, Ms. Mottl highlighted the extensive network of international students and alumni of the master program.

In the presentation of Alumni Günter Maier (Founder and Managing Director, MG Energy+), he told about his career progression, which has developed positively and newly particularly due to the final degree MSc Renewable Energy in CEE. After graduation in 2008, he first gained new experiences at OMV Power, especially in Southeast Europe, Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa. After three years, he finally established/founded his own company, MG Energy+. At the same time, he is involved in many other projects. As alumni (class of 2005-2007) since 2014 he is teaching on the subject of sustainable energy systems. Although renewable energy was a side issue at the beginning, Günter Maier has already known the significance, initially. Altogether, in his point of view, renewable energy is both currently ubiquitous, in many areas indispensable and an important part of the energy mix.

Taken as a whole, besides the glorious view over Vienna and the exclusive buffet the presentation of the course as well as networking was the focus of the Business Breakfast.
