Report on the ETIA “Trash Talk”

The first panel discussion of this academic year in the ETIAtalks series was held on November 30th, 2016 in the Festsaal of the Diplomatic Academy. The title was “Trash Talk Illegal Waste Dumping and Trade“. The speakers were four experts from various fields related to waste: Yvonne Ewang-‐Savincenti (Legal Officer, Secretariat   of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions), Ian Banerjee (specialist for urban development, TU Wien, ISRA), Dana Vyzinkarova (e-‐waste  expert, TU Wien, Institute for Water Quality, Resource and Waste Management) and Jiao Tang (Head of Department of Technical Cooperation, International Solid Waste Association). As a matter of fact, latter two, Dana and Jiao, are alumni from the MSc ETIA program.

The panelists discussed the current situation regarding illegal waste dumping as well as its consequences on the environment, the society and the economy. Even though the talk focused on the environmental impact, important connections to the economy, especially regarding economic growth were analyzed. Furthermore, the panelists together with the audience looked into potential alternatives to waste dumping under consideration of their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, the legal framework, in which waste dumping is embedded was a central topic during the  discussion.

Due to the differing backgrounds of the panelists and the audience, the discussion was very lively and interesting. Finally, the audience had the possibility to personally address the speakers at an organic buffet.
