Excursion MSc Engineering Management - High Tech from Austria

Class 2015-2017 fot the MSc Program Engineering Management and Prof. Peter Kopacek (Academic Program Director)

At the end of the MSc Engineering Management the Class 2015-2017 visited Kapsch Components, a subsidiary company and production site of the Kapsch TrafficCom, which is part of the Kapsch Group. The company is based in Vienna and since its foundation in 1892 a family run business, with strong core values. The company is based in Vienna and counts over 6800 employees worldwide.

The factory we visited focuses on the production of intelligent traffic systems and relevant components. Their products include in-vehicle products, RF Field products and Video and sensor products. The visited facility has 3 main parts: Production of PCBs (printed circuit boards), On board unit production and the department Assembling and Testing for Roadside, Cable and GSM-Railway Equipment.

The company visit first began with a safety briefing where all the participating members were made to wear ESD strips and ESD coats. After an introduction we visited the production of PCB`s were we got an illustration of SMD Technology. A battery soldered on a PCB, assembled with upper and lower casing results in an OBU (on board unit) which is tested in a sealed chamber, avoiding RF (radio frequency) interference. Nearly all necessary steps are automatized by means of the latest technologies.

For most of us it was a completely new “High Tech” world and an impressive illustration of “Production Automation” and “Total Quality Management – TQM”.
