Highlights of the ETIATalk”#SeriousAboutWildlifeCrime”

The second ETIAtalks panel discussion took place on March 9, 2017 at the Festsaal of the Diplomatic Academy. The experts on the topic were Lejda Toci (Consultant in the Department of Wild Animals and Forestry, UNODC and Alumna ETIA08), Tim Steele (Senior Consultant for Anticorruption, UNODC), Dr. Christian Walzer (Head of Conservation Medicine, Vetmeduni Wien) and Reina-Marie Loader (Founder of Cinéma Humain and filmmaker). The discussion was moderated by Catherine Lankes (MAIS II and freelance journalist for the Austrian Press Agency).

The evening was dedicated to the fight against poaching and illegal wildlife trafficking and aimed at underlining the importance of a discourse on all levels. For this purpose, scenes from the documentary "Horn" by Reina-Marie Loader were shown at the beginning. The subsequent expert discussion mainly focused on the social, political and economic context of wildlife crime. The trade with wildlife products and the corruption apparatus behind them were particularly debated. The experts were also able to discuss numerous interesting questions from the audience. Afterwards, the lively interdisciplinary conversation was continued with drinks and an organic buffet.
