Career Spotlight: Victor Rodionov

Get to know the success-story of xDroid, an emerging start-up in the gaming industry. Victor Rodionov, the founder and one of our graduates of the Professional MBA Entrepreneurship & Innovation tells us in an interesting interview how he started this business.

How did your journey begin?
A friend of mine and me, we both have kids and we love to play with remote cars outside together. The problem is that after 20 minutes it is getting a little bit boring. So we were thinking of combining the classic remote control car with the fun and excitement of video games. At that time I started with the specialization modules of the MBA program and I talked with a classmate about this idea. She joined the project and we decided to fully dedicate the specialization to frame this idea.

How did the MBA program influence this project?
The first module of the specialization was a real inspiration. Our first business plan of this idea was an assignment during that module. Working on it gave us a really good structure and a framework. In the course of each module and assignment we applied the input directly to the idea. The lecturers created an environment for us students to communicate with each other so we took every chance to ask our questions and get feedback from the lecturers and classmates.  It was really helpful to test different scenarios in class, e.g. different marketing ideas. We also dedicated our Master’s Thesis to it, so we actually spent the whole specialization working on our idea. It was learning by doing and it helped us to bring this idea to life.

What happened in addition to the MBA courses?
The further this project evolved, the more serious we got about it and we were then thinking of getting some real funding. We successfully applied to INITS, a business incubator and TU spin-off company, which is sort of an entry point for start-ups. Once accepted to the program, INITS provides you with an office, a loan and services. You have regular meetings to demonstrate your progress. The main goal is to bring young start-ups to the market and get them in touch with customers to get direct feedback. That really helped us to adapt our product to the needs of the customers.
Apart from that we successfully completed an acceleration program in Hong Kong to establish a network as the manufacturing will be located in China. We also won various competitions, e.g. Start-up live and Entrepreneurship Avenue. Recently, we closed a deal with an investor and secured a grant with FFG. The current company value is about €1,5 million.

Can you tell us more about your product?
The initial idea was to equip a classic remote control car so that it can interact with the environment, to collect points for example. In the course of the MBA and INITS program we completely changed the product. We’re developing now a gamification kit and a social gaming platform that allow players – both in single or multi player mode – to transfer any gaming scenario to the real world with any toy or device, even themselves.  We call this concept augmented gaming, which means that we are augmenting the game with real physical objects.
