How do wind turbines work? Where does the electricity go?

These and other basic questions regarding wind energy were answered during the module on wind power and on grid integration in Bruck/Leitha. After that impressive look behind the scenes, the message was received: Wind energy will serve as one cornerstone and a driving force for the application of a world energy system, which is driven by renewable energies to substitute fossil and nuclear sources.

During one week the students got an in depth look in wind energy sector and our energy distribution system. From the selection of suitable locations for wind farms, to the planning and construction phases to final assembly and test runs of a wind turbine generator to operating and maintaining a wind park were the topics that were covered. Additionally, energy markets were analysed and ways of integrating renewable energy into the existing distribution infrastructure were discussed in depth.
During two days of excursions, the students visited several existing wind parks in the region around Bruck an der Leitha and sites of wind parks under construction. One very interesting tour took us to one of Vienna’s main electricity switching stations in Rothneusiedl, Vienna. It is owned and operated by the company “Austria Power Grid”. It is not only an important site for Vienna’s energy distribution but also for the whole of Central Europe. The technology in use at the site was very impressive.

Windpower and the integration of renewable energy into the existing systems are only two of all in all ten interesting and practice-oriented modules of the MSc program Renewable Energy Systems.
