First Alumni of a highly sophisticated MSc Program

Graduation under the patronage of Dr. Beatrix Karl

On July 6, 2010, the first class of the postgraduate Program „MSc Economics“, a joint program of the Vienna University of Technology and the Institute of Advanced Studies (IHS) proudly presented its first „Master of Science Economics“.

Under the patronage of Dr. Beatrix Karl, Austrian Federal Minister of Science and Research, the academic ceremony was held at the IHS: The graduates, their families and friends as well as the guests of honor were welcomed by the Prof. Bernhard Felderer, Head of the IHS. Afterwards Dr. Karl conferred Master’s Degrees the Graduates an congratulated them cordially, which was a great honor for all of them.

In his commencement speech Wolfgang Pesendorfer, Professor at the Department of Economics at Princeton University and alumni of the precursor progam, emphasized the importance of this highly sophisticated education, especially in comparison with other top international postgraduate programs. Finally the new “MSc Economics” presented their Master’s Theses, which was also a highlight of the ceremony.

The MSc Economics will start for the third time in Fall 2010, the students come from the Ukraine, Hungary and Austria.

The joint MSc is a rigorous, quantitative education and equips graduates with the advanced tools to undertake a research career in economics. Consistent with this goal, the MSc Economics is aimed at highly talented individuals, who have an outstanding academic record during their previous university studies.
