Evening Lecture about membrane structures in Australia

Sydney Opera House (Festival of Light, 2009)

On Monday, February 28, 2011 the Vienna University of Technology organized the second Public Lecture within the postgraduate M.Eng. "Membrane Lightweight Structures".

This time, the lecture was held by Peter Kneen from Australia, a renowned expert in the field of lightweight structures. Kneen talked about the evolution of lightweight and membrane structures in Australia from the 1950s and showed numerous examples of main concert and opera venues in Sydney and Melbourn. He also presented other structures for major sporting venues.

Australia’s unique climatic and geographical features have lead to extensive use of shade cloth structures for domestic houses, orchards, playgrounds and schools.

Kneen also used the work of members of the Lightweight Structures Association of Australasia (LSAA) to demonstrate how the technology has evolved for projects in Australia and around the world and offered new insights into the fascinating field of membrane structures.
