Outsourcing in Facility Management

Outsourcing is a term which is very often used in our daily business and is also an important factor in the management of facilities. However, many times, outsourcing is being equalized with facility management. A study carried out by the IFM-Institute of the Vienna University of Technology shows that this simply is not true.

Since 2005 the IFM-Institute carries out an annual survey about status quo and current trends in facility management in Austria. Within this survey the facility managers of the 100 biggest Austrian companies are questioned. The survey of 2010 shows that outsourcing remains one of the biggest strategies in facility management. But: facility management does not equal outsourcing. The needs of a company have to be established internally – otherwise outsourcing cannot be successful.

The survey shows the trend for organizations to focus on their core business and to outsource facility services such as cleaning, maintenance and preventive maintenance as well as winter services.
We are looking forward to the results of the study on facility management trends in 2011. The results will be presented in spring 2012, for further information please visit the website reug.org.

Facility services and outsourcing are also topics within the Professional MBA Facility Management offered by the Vienna University of Technology. Information on this program can be found here.
