Career Spotlight: Bmstr. Ing. Christian Bartl, MEng.

CEO of unizono design und planungs gmbh
MEng Membrane Lightweight Structures
Class 2010-2012

Why did you decide to take part in the MEng Membrane Lightweight Structures at the Vienna University of Technology?

My special interest was in the technology of lightweight structures, especially being able to reach a maximum of beautiful and user friendly work with minimal resources. Because of the interesting lectures and the organizational structure I decided to study at TU Wien. The program is set up in a way that facilitates working as a CEO of an architecture office since work related agendas could be well organized because of the blocked structure.

Were you able to establish contacts during your studies that are useful for your further carrier?
One of the most interesting aspects of the studies was the number of different nationalities and cultures represented by the different students. International contacts are always important for ones networks and cross-border projects. They can lead to interesting synergies for new projects, even more so as architecture and especially membrane and lightweight structures is a very international field. It was also very interesting to meet professors and lecturers with years’ long experience in this field and who have realized unique projects. In addition, friendships have been made that persist even after the finishing of the studies.

What has changed since the beginning of the studies? In what way the studies are useful in achieving your career goals?
I was able to open a new business field at the office. Membrane architecture and lightweight architecture have become one of my specialities, next to acoustic architecture. This field requires specialized knowledge that not everyone can offer. Hence, the studies permitted me to have a new “unique feature”. Also, I was able to successfully realize some projects in this field, through my studies.

How did you profit personally from the master program?
On the one hand through acquiring expertise and experience and on the other hand by establishing an international network of fellow students and professors.

What was your funniest moment during the studies?
“Dragosla” (a celebration at “Pointers”).

What are your professional plans for the next 3-5 years?
I would like to successfully continue my architecture office and further establish my specializations of acoustic, energy and membrane structures / lightweight structures. In the last years I realized some highly interesting projects and won some architecture prices and distinctions. Another important part in my professional career remains my continuing education. The construction industry is always subject to changes in legal aspects and technical alterations. Therefore, it is important to stay up-to-date.

What are your hobbies?
I like to do sports such as skiing, cycling and hiking in the mountains. Also, I am interest in music and play tenor saxophone.

If you ruled the world for one day, what would you like to change?
If I could rule the world as a “one day dictator” I would change the world to stay “ruler of the world” as I am convinced as this would be the best option for our world (end of irony).
