At the 126th conference of the Austrian Gas and Water Association (ÖVGW) in Wels, the biggest Austrian platform of this kind, over 400 participants got together to discuss future challenges and innovative approaches focusing on the security of supply. A traditional part of the event is the awarding of a 2 000 Euro endowed study prize. This year the president of the ÖVGW, DI Dr Wolfgang Zerobin, awarded the prize in the field ‘water’ to the ETIA graduate Isabel Mank for her Master thesis “Energy blackouts and water outages. A risk management approach towards raising awareness and assuming responsibility”.

Brief insight into the Master thesis

A long-lasting and far-reaching energy outage causes a halt of the provision of water, a low water quality, a breakdown of the communication devices and social unrest. Interviews and contacts with experts in civil protection and disaster prevention from Austria and Japan build the basis for assumptions, results and solutions to assure early preparation and regular exchange between stakeholders and to decrease negative outcomes on the water sector caused by a blackout. In case of energy and water outages immediate cooperative action and decision-making are required, and not only when it is already too late.
