“New forms of organizations & innovation”

Distinguished Guest Speaker Event as part of the Professional MBA “Entrepreneurship & Innovation”


At the Distinguished Guest Speaker Event on January 27, Stefan Faatz-Ferstl, evolutionary catalyst at “dwarfs and Giants” – a consultancy which stands for established systemic organizational development and for the support of organizations on their way towards agility and a new way of working – introduced new approaches based on self-organizing principles and cultures of innovations.

Mr. Faatz-Ferstl started his presentation with an interactive part and asked the participants to get together in a circle of chairs and discuss in groups what they expect from the event and what could be behind the name “dwarfs and Giants”. After a long day in class this approach contributed to a relaxed atmosphere among the participants.  

The 21st century is characterized by major changes in technology and an exponential speed of change. This has led to evolutionary changes in production, communication and information altering our work environment tremendously. Throughout the evolution of organizations, work has been organized in hierarchical structures and designed for almost stable contexts with only incremental changes. In times of unpredictable surroundings conventional structures will cost companies time, money, knowledge, flexibility, and employee engagement, says Mr. Faatz-Ferstl.

He therefore suggests that humans have to become good at dealing with uncertainty and that it can be achieved by organizing work in new ways. New models of organizations, the so called “teal” organizations, are emerging and introducing the next evolutionary step in organizational development. This approach sees organizations as independent forces following their own purpose and not just meeting management’s objectives. Within a decentralized structure, small teams are self-organized and responsible for their own governance and the way they interact with other parts of the organization. This allows a company structure to be very responsive and adaptive as adjustments are continuously made to better serve the organization's purpose. Mr. Faatz-Ferstl also presented a number of success stories of companies which have implemented these new forms of organizing work.

At the end of his presentation, Mr. Faatz-Ferstl and the audience entered into a Q&A and an active discussion.
