Parallel programming for faster and more efficient computer simulations


Want to boost your computer simulations by writing parallel code that runs efficiently on modern compute clusters?

Join us this fall at TU Wien in one of three courses in English on the topic of parallel programming:

  • Parallelization with MPI: Parallel programming with the Message Passing Interface (MPI) is the dominating programming model.
  • Shared memory parallelization with OpenMP: In this seminar, the focus lies on Multi-Core (Shared-Memory) CPUs, which are most easily and efficiently programmed using OpenMP.
  • Parallel I/O: Computer simulations face an ever-growing need for scalability and are pushing the limitations on size, allowing properties to be simulated more accurately. Therefore, increasingly large data sets, be it reading input data or writing results, have to be processed. This course provides an overview of I/O strategies, best practices and optimization potential.

The courses are offered by the Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC) at TU Wien and start from a beginner’s level. Hands-on exercises (in C and Fortran) allow users to immediately test and understand the basic concepts of parallel programming.
