Education: B.A. from the Johns Hopkins University (1978) and M.A. (1980) and Ph.D., with distinction (1988), from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. Positions: Research Fellow of the Giovanni Agnelli Foundation (1988-1993), Resident Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins University Bologna Center (1993-2003), Adjunct Professor at the Robert K. Nilsson Center for European Studies, Dickinson College, Bologna, and the Villa Spelman, Johns Hopkins University, Florence, (2003-2006). Senior Adjunct Professor of History, The Johns Hopkins University Bologna Center (2009- ).

His Research Interests are History of International Relations, European Political History, Contemporary Italian History. Publications include: Does Central Europe Still Exist (ed.) 2007, Italy in the International System, 1900-1922 (chpt.) 2002, Mobilizing the Nation: Italian Propaganda in the Great War (art.) 2002, Il nazionalismo economico nell'Italia liberale 1998, and Reflections on the Identity of Europe (ed.) 1996; Between 2003 and 2006 served as historical consultant for a series of television documentaries shown on the History Channel, including programs on Anzio, Slaughterhouse Cassino, The Gothic Line, and The Russian Front. Currently researching a general history of Italy during the First World War.
