Special seminars

Working closely with the institutes and faculties of the University, special expert seminars are offered to coincide with specific teaching points. This portfolio consists of seminars ranging from one to several days in length, as well as regular courses. It affords those interested the opportunity of quickly acquiring knowledge of current key topics in condensed form. The aim of these special seminars, which are held in German or English, is to communicate specialist knowledge that is of practical use.

Chinese for Beginners - Introductory Course (Offered only in German)

During the last two decades, the rapid economic growth drew a lot of foreign companies to invest in China. In order to be actively involved in China, it is not only important to possess the necessary technical and business know-how, but it is also important to know the language, the colloquial forms as well as the culture and society of the country.

Representative for energy efficiency (offered only in German)

Participants will learn the basics of sustainalble optimization of energy. They will also learn collection of energy data and they can read and realize energy passes.

Thermodynamic and kinetic simulation with MatCalc

This 4-days course gives an introduction to modeling and simulation of stable and metastable phase equilibria and the kinetics of phase transformations in solid-state materials. It covers basic equilibrium thermodynamics and precipitation kinetics modeling, discussing both the theoretical approaches as well as practical examples.

Preparation course for the Projectmanagement Certification according to  IPMA (offered only in German)

Projectmanagement is becoming increasingly important. The ability to act fast and flexible is crucial in today's business activities. Projectmanagement develops this skill. The course prepares its participants for the certification examination IPMA Level D or Level C.

VSC Training Course: Parallelization with MPI

On clusters and distributed memory architectures, parallel programming with the Message Passing Interface (MPI) is the dominating programming model. This 3 days course teaches parallel programming with MPI starting from a beginners level. Hands-on sessions (in C and Fortran) will allow users to immediately test and understand the basic constructs of the Message Passing Interface (MPI). (Content Level: 70% for beginners, 30% advanced)

VSC Training Course: Shared memory parallelization with OpenMP

The focus of this 2 days course is on shared memory parallelization with OpenMP for dual-core, multi-core, shared memory, and ccNUMA platforms. This course teaches OpenMP starting from a beginners level. Hands-on sessions (in C and Fortran) will allow users to immediately test and understand the OpenMP directives, environment variables, and library routines.

VSC Training Course: Parallel I/O  

This course will be about parallel I/O with a special focus on portable data formats. It will introduce the use of the HDF5 and NetCDF (NetCDF4 and PnetCDF) library interfaces, and hands-on exercises (in C/C++ or Fortran) will allow to immediately test and understand their usage. Performance hints, optimization potential, and best practices for I/O will be discussed in detail throughout the whole course.

VSC Training Course: Introduction to Hybrid Programming in HPC

Most HPC systems are clusters of shared memory nodes. Such SMP nodes can be small multi-core CPUs up to large many-core CPUs. Parallel programming may combine the distributed memory parallelization on the node interconnect (e.g., with the Message Passing Interface - MPI) with the shared memory parallelization inside of each node (e.g., with OpenMP or MPI-3.0 shared memory). This course analyses the strengths and weaknesses of several parallel programming models on clusters of SMP nodes.

VSC - Node-Level Performance Engineering

This course covers performance engineering approaches on the compute node level. "Performance engineering" as we define it is more than employing tools to identify hotspots and bottlenecks. It is about developing a thorough understanding of the interactions between software and hardware. This process must start at the core, socket, and node level, where the code gets executed that does the actual computational work. Once the architectural requirements of a code are understood and correlated with performance measurements, the potential benefit of optimizations can often be predicted. We introduce a "holistic" node-level performance engineering strategy based on the Roofline model and apply it to different algorithms from computational science. Architectural details that are relevant for performance, such as pipelining, SIMD, superscalarity, memory hierarchies, etc., are covered in due detail.

This course provides –via lectures, demos, and hands-on labs– scientific training in Computational Science, and in addition, the scientific exchange of the participants among themselves.
